Must Love Horses Is Back – With Briana behind Pipers Zoo

For Briana of @pipers_zoo, horses aren’t just a passion—they’re a way of life passed down through generations. Growing up surrounded by horses in Montana, Briana’s journey has been shaped by family, resilience, and a deep love for the equine spirit. Today, alongside her husband, she breeds and raises quarter horses, continuing a legacy that began long before her time.

"I quite literally cannot remember a time when horses were not a part of my existence."

Her advice for anyone diving into the horse world? Be ready to learn, stay patient, and trust your gut (and your horse). From fear to fearless—how she made her biggest comeback yet. Read on.

1. What about horses captured your heart and made you fall in love with them?

have been blessed to never know a life without horses.
My maternal grandpa grew up with horses and carried that lifestyle through to his own life, my mom's life, and now my life. My mom had a home-raised mare named Sassy that I got to learn how to ride on, and I quite literally cannot remember a time when horses were not a part of my existence.
I purchased my first horse as an adult in 2012 and now my husband and I breed and raise quarter horses in my hometown in Montana.

2. In your experience, what’s the most fulfilling moment or accomplishment you’ve had while working with horses?

As with most people who grew up with horses, I used to be pretty darn fearless around them, until I witnessed a really bad horse wreck involving my mom, and then I had a sudden and debilitating fear of horses in general and riding specifically. It took me a long time (years) to even begin to overcome that fear.

My husband gifted me one of our first foals born in our breeding program in 2020 (Ronnie) and I decided I was going to start him under saddle myself when the time came, even though the idea was terrifying at the time. I figured I had a few years to work up to it though, and I knew I would be disappointed in myself if I gave up. In the late Fall of 2023, I put the first ride on him and we spent 2024 riding, learning, and growing together. In my 35 years of existing with horses, bringing Ronnie along myself has been the most rewarding accomplishment I've experienced so far.

3. For someone just starting their journey with horses, what’s the first piece of advice you would give them to ensure a successful and enjoyable experience?

Gosh, I think there is so much. They are big, strong, powerful beasts but they are also so sensitive and fragile. I think practically speaking, understand that they are expensive, require a lot of time, and a good working relationship with your vet and farrier are non-negotiables.

Beyond that, know that there are many different ways of doing just about everything and there are a ton of opinions from absolutely everybody in the horse world. Don't be afraid to be open to new ideas, but also don't be afraid to stick with what works for you and your horse.

Thank you, Briana! So much wisdom and inspiration.
