For the Love of Horses: Advice for a Safe, Fun Equestrian Journey
For many equestrians, the connection to horses begins early and only deepens over time. That’s exactly the case for Isabelle, whose lifelong passion for horses has shaped not just her hobbies, but her outlook on life. In this interview, Isabelle shares what draws her to the world of horses, the fulfillment she’s found in working with her own horse as an adult, and her advice for new riders on setting themselves up for success. She also highlights the importance of inclusivity in the equestrian community, encouraging us all to help make the horse world a space where everyone feels seen.
"You must figure out what works best for you so that you can have FUN with riding and horses."
1. What about horses captured your heart and made you fall in love with them?
I don’t know if there was any specific thing I can pinpoint, but my mom leased a horse when I was maybe 3 or 4 and then put me in lessons and I’ve just never stopped wanting to be around them. I’ve always enjoyed every aspect of horses, not just riding. I love to groom and clean tack. It’s all so therapeutic.
2. In your experience, what’s the most fulfilling moment or accomplishment you’ve had while working with horses?
Buying and working with my own horse as an adult. I love getting to know all his nuances. I just enjoy spending time with him no matter what we’re doing.
3. For someone just starting their journey with horses, what’s the first piece of advice you would give them to ensure a successful and enjoyable experience?
Set yourself up for success. If you don’t like the way a trainer runs their program, find another. Don’t participate if you don’t think something feels safe. Think of any story a non-equestrian has told you about the one time they rode a horse and they got bit, or bucked off, or fell and sustained an injury. Safety and advocating for yourself is crucial. You must figure out what works best for you so that you can have FUN with riding and horses.
